When you initiate a scan or a scheduled scan starts the Antivirus Scan wizard will appear. If the scan wizard does not appear, the scan may be configured to run silently, in the background.

Look for the scan progress icon in the system tray, then click it to open the scan window and to see the scan progress. You can perform this action for all scan types.

BitDefender can scan

-          all files (program files or user defined exceptions)

-          packed files

-          archives

-          E-mail archives

-          Memory

-          Windows Registry

-          and or cookies.

Program files or applications are files with special extensions, such as .exe, .com or .bat, more likely to contain viruses than other file types.

Packed files and archives are files that have been compressed in order to take up less space on disk, or to be sent via email.

Email archives contain the email messages received through a specific e-mail client. For example, Outlook stores e-mails in .pst files. The memory is the Operating System zone where programs are run and files are loaded when accessed by you or by a program. Only programs active in memory, can access your data. This is why it is critical to scan the memory for any active viruses. Cookies are short lines of text that websites put on your computer's hard drive when you access them to help track your online behavior, for example display specific ads based on the type of websites you visited prior to that moment.

Depending on the scan task, during the scanning analysis, you can see the scan status and various statistics.

You can see how many files BitDefender scans every second. The number of scanned items represents the number of files, registry keys, processes and cookies that BitDefender has checked. Skipped items are the files that do not have to be checked by the BitDefender engines because they have been recognized by the product as clean based on prior scans.

The number of infected objects represents the number of files, registry keys, processes and cookies that BitDefender has detected as potentially malicious. Hidden items are the objects (files, registry keys, processes) hidden by a rootkit, generally to avoid their being detected by regular antivirus programs. Password-protected items require a password so that they can be opened and checked for malware. If BitDefender detects such items during scanning, you will be prompted to provide the password, as otherwise the scanning is not possible.

At the end of the process, if threats are detected, the scan results are displayed in a new window. The infected objects are displayed in groups, based on the kind of malware they are infected with.

You can choose an overall action to be taken for all issues or you can select separate actions for each group of issues such as ignore, delete, move files to quarantine

When the issues have been fixed, a new set of scan results will appear.

You can then see a results summary. For more detailed information, click View logs to view the report files generated each time the task was executed. Each file indicates the status of the logged scanning process, the scan date and time and a summary of the scan results. The scan log contains detailed on the logged scanning process, such as scanning options and target, the threats found and the remedial actions taken.
